2. Why diagnostics important

When it comes to the vehicle repair, the work is either one with accompanying diagnosis, in-depth inspection & analysis in other words, or one without diagnosis. In the case of one without diagnosis, it can be called hands-on work/repair which requires skills mostly on how to remove & replace parts, and this work can be done basically by any auto mechanics who have necessary tools and information, and only difference by person is how fast he/she can get the job done, and of course the time is mostly dependent on how many times have done it. However, if the work requires diagnosis, the end result may greatly vary depending on who performs the trouble-shooting. I can tell you how to distinguish a technician who has good diagnostic skills from who hasn’t based on my experience as a technical instructor during the tutorial time if you ask me.

Based on my 27+ years experience, 1-5 diagnosis cases out of 100 vehicle problems are difficult-to-troubleshoot ones, which may require more than one hour to find the cause. In other words, I find 95% or more of my diagnosis is done within an hour due to the experiences that I used to work as a field engineer who performed highly difficult-to-solve diagnosis for dealer technicians. Through my experience and relentless experiments, I could establish a solid diagnostic procedure by symptom/system, which can reduce time and increase accuracy. Therefore, I believe this fix-it-right at the first time skills can help customers visiting the shop spend less money and deal with less hassles. However, I hope you don’t get me wrong about my capability. I’m an ordinary human who can make a mistake at times, and if this causes you to spend more time or give inconvenience consequently, then I’ll compensate you for it because I do care about you.

In addition, it is important for a shop/technician to use proper diagnostic tools according to the level of difficulty so that the result of the diagnostics be accurate and reliable. Most importantly, I believe the logical approach for each troubleshooting along with using appropriate testing devices/tools is the key to finding the root cause.
